Weigh it Safe: Using the 10x Rule

Getting the right equipment for the job means buying weighing equipment that you can depend on. Without the "safe zone" – an order of magnitude that dictates your weighing scales' accuracy should be dependable to a tenth of amounts that you commonly weigh – you could be putting your company in a vulnerable, and potentially liable, situation.

With accuracy so readily available in the form of high-tech scales, the pressure falls on you to validate the accuracy of what you are measuring, rather than the customer to verify they've gotten the correct amount. Think you're ready to tackle this challenge? Ask yourself one question: when was the last time your weighing scales were calibrated?

Depending on your industry, you may have a calibration or inspection requirement for your scales, but that doesn't mean that you should rely solely on those inspections. They may only be held annually or even years apart, which means it's very possible to slip out of compliance in the interim.

Much like a vehicle, your weighing scales should be maintained before there's an issue, particularly if they can't be relied on for 10-times weight accuracy. The reason that the "10x rule" works so well is that those increments become an early warning system, signaling the need for a calibration before there's a large impact to your business or customers. Ignore it, and you'll only be hurting your bottom line.

A Scale Overhaul

Can you stand by your current scale setup, and trust that it can deliver accuracy to fineness such as 1.6 ounces for every pound? If the answer isn't a resounding "Yes!" it's probably time to take a long, hard look at your weighing equipment, in addition to setting up a voluntary maintenance schedule.

Remember – it's always better to do proactive maintenance and upkeep than to rely on a stern citation from an oversight body to motivate your weighing accuracy. For the sake of your company's image, your state and federal compliance, and your customers, make sure your scales are weighing the truth – not options.
